Sask. tattoo studio owner eyes international magazine cover and $25,000 prize

Porcupine Plain’s Sasha Janzen can fondly remember getting her first tattoo at the age of 16, and still laughs at the thought of how her parents let her do that.

Around 15 years later, she now has around 100 tattoos and runs a medi-spa and tattoo studio. Recently, on the advice of a friend, she entered a contest run by Inked Magazine which could potentially give her the opportunity to appear of the cover and win $25,000.

“I would probably put it back into my business and also take my boys on an incredible trip like Disneyland,” she said.

When asked about entering the contest and what motivated her to sign up, Janzen confessed coming from a small town, she was a little nervous about it.

“I had a lot of second guesses about it just because I knew people would have to see my pictures so it was definitely a huge out of the box thing for me,” she said.

Janzen has been doing tattoo work for the better of two years and permanent make-up for six years. She said tattoos are an expression of who you are – not just what you get but also where you get them and how you get them done.

“Some people have extreme meaning behind theirs and some people just get them because they like them and I love both reasons,” she said.

With respect to her own personal favourite tattoo, Janzen said it would be the ones she let her sons do – a happy face on her arm and a moon on her leg.

Public voting for the contest started on Jan. 18, and the top 15 selection for each groups ends Feb. 3. As of Friday, Janzen was first in her group.

Acknowledging the contest finals are in March, around the time of her 31st birthday, Janzen has her fingers crossed.

“So that would be an ultimate birthday present,” she said.
