P.A.’s Howe gets a pair over his hometown team to help Pats to victory over Raiders

Prince Albert’s Tanner Howe sure loves playing against his hometown team.

Howe has four of his goals this season against the Prince Albert Raiders this year, with two coming on Tuesday to lift the Regina Pats to a 4-0 win over the Raiders at the Brandt Centre.

The game seemed even until Raiders’ defenceman Trevor Thurston inadvertently clipped Pats’ Connor Bedard with a high stick, forcing the Raiders to kill off a double-minor.

Howe got his first goal of the game on that power play, a turning point that Raiders’ assistant coach Jeff Truitt pointed out after the game.

“We took the four-minute minor which turned the tide and really gave them momentum,” Truitt said. “That kind of started the downward spiral. Penalties are one thing, but when you’re taking double minors and things like that and give teams extended power plays, it’s not a healthy situation when it comes to winning. We have to be more disciplined than that.”

As a 16-year-old rookie, Howe has 16 goals and 33 points in 30 games for the Pats.

Connor Bedard scored and got the assists on the other three Pats goals, even the empty net goal Cole Carrier scored late in the game.

Matthew Kieper got his first WHL shutout, making 17 saves.

With the loss, the Raiders (15-22-1-1, 32 points) got leapfrogged by the Pats (15-17-0-1, 33 points) and move down to 10th place in the WHL Eastern Conference.

Tikhon Chaika appeared in his 21st straight game on Tuesday, as he is either started or hopped over the boards in every Raider game since Nov. 24. He made 21 saves on 24 shots in Tuesday’s defeat.

That’s the longest appearance streak for any Raider goaltender in the regular season since Rejean Beauchemin played in the first 23 games of the 2003-04 season.

But if you want to go past the regular season, Ian Scott played in 36 straight games—the last 10 of the 2018-19 regular season, all 23 playoff games to lead the Raiders to the 2019 WHL Championship, then all three Memorial Cup games the Raiders played that year.
