Cold temperatures returning to P.A. after extremely warm weekend

Jan 14, 2022 | 1:00 PM

The warm weather Prince Albert is currently experiencing won’t be here for much longer.

That’s according to Terri Lang, a regional meteorologist with Environment Canada, who told paNOW the temperature is expected to dip again starting Monday.

It won’t be cold enough to cause an extreme cold warning as the expected highs will hover between -12 C and -22 C for the week.

However, Lang said there’s a strong possibility the freezing temperatures will be back before long.

“The time of year when the average temperatures bottom out is about the third, fourth week of January, so we’re not even there yet and we know based on last year, February can be a very cold month.”

There is some good news about next week.

The sun is expected to be out in full force for several days. However, this will come after a strong system brings in some snow on Monday.

“It’s got some energy behind it and some strength behind it, so I think we could see a good five to 10 cm out of this particular system,” Lang added.

In the meantime, the weekend will be one people will want to take advantage of.

Lang added the temperature is expected to hover around zero with a strong possibility it could get even warmer.

“A combination of sunny and warm is welcome in the middle of January.”

She is reminding everyone who plans to take advantage of the warm weather to drive carefully on the roads. The freeze-thaw cycle P.A. is currently experiencing has been known to cause slippery conditions.

“When it cools off again overnight that makes for some black ice.”

Those planning to leave the city are encouraged to check Saskatchewan’s Highway Hotline to see what conditions they could be driving into.
