Saskatchewan farm show returns after one year hiatus

Jan 6, 2022 | 2:20 PM

MELFORT, Sask. – The pandemic could not stop Western Canadian Crop Production Show from going ahead this year.

The four-day event at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, Sask. will connect producers with the people behind the latest products and services in the field of crop science and technology.

Prairieland Agriculture Manager Lori Cates said over 340 exhibitors from across the prairie provinces will be in attendance, including more than 50 new vendors, occupying 1,015 booths spread out over 240,000 square feet of trade show space.

She said it’s good to be back.

“We’ve been working on this show since July and our exhibitors are excited to be back,” Cates said. “The vast majority of who we’ve had in the last 38 years of the show are back. We’re excited. We need to get back to normal and from Prairieland Park’s perspective we need to support the agriculture industry. This is one of the ways that we do it.”

Cates said the great part about the show is getting together with your peers and meeting somebody that you haven’t seen for a while and having coffee.

“Our exhibitors are telling us that they need to get back in front of their customers, they want that face-to-face contact and this show has always been about doing business. That’s what we’re geared up for,” she said.

The Information Theatre is sponsored by Nufarm this year. Speakers will discuss a variety of issues from supply chain challenges to kochia management.

Saskatchewan commodity groups will be hosting their annual meetings and market outlook sessions at Prairieland this year.

“We’re really excited to have all of those groups here. Most of them will be in person. A lot of them will be a hybrid meeting where they’ll be in person and will be broadcast. It’s good for the show and it’s good for the groups to have everyone under one roof,” Cates said.

The Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame will announce their 2021 inductees on January 11 at 2:00 p.m.

Cates said they will be following Saskatchewan public health guidelines.

“Anyone that comes into our buildings will need to provide proof of vaccination or they can provide a negative COVID-19 test from an approved testing provider,” Cates said. “We are a masked building, so everyone will be masked. We’ll have hand sanitizing stations throughout the building. We are very, very confident we are doing everything we can to keep our patrons, our exhibitors and our staff safe.”

Daily admission is $18 while a two-day pass is $32.

Cates said another popular option for admission is purchasing tickets online.

Show hours are Monday from noon to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
