Jan 6, 2022 | 10:00 AM

A 31-year-old man, facing gun related charges, has been released from custody following his most recent court appearance Wednesday in Prince Albert.

Tanner Courtney was arrested on Dec. 12, following an incident that started in the city’s west flat and ended near the river bank.

According to information provided by police, at approximately 9:10 p.m., officers responded to a report of a break-and-enter, in the 800 block of 14th St. W.

While responding, further information was received of gunshots in the area and officers soon after observed the suspect vehicle leaving the area.

A traffic stop was performed in the 300 Block of River St. W. Shortly after, police located a loaded, sawed-off shotgun and ammunition. No one was injured in the incident however police say there was evidence found to suggest the firearm was discharged, causing damage to the residence.

Details of Wednesday’s hearing, including the judge’s reasons for granting bail, are protected under a publication ban. The case was adjourned to Jan. 20. The allegations against Courtney have not been proven, but if convicted, he would face a lengthy prison sentence.

Courtney’s previous conviction

In late January, 2013, Tanner Courtney received a nearly two year jail sentence for his role in the May 2012 collision that killed community figure Ben Darchuk. The head-on crash happened about nine kilometres north of the city.

At the time, Courtney had been found to be under the influence of alcohol and just coming down off a cocaine high. A witness had seen Courtney weaving in and out of lanes of traffic, almost as though he seemed to be falling asleep.

Courtney, then 22, was also handed a three-year driving prohibition and ordered to pay a $100 federal surcharge.
