PAGC Women’s Commission providing jackets to those in need

Dec 6, 2021 | 3:00 PM

As temperatures dip this week near minus 30 Celsius, the Prince Albert Grand Council’s Women’s Commission, in partnership with the Indian Metis Friendship Centre, is helping make sure more people have a warm jacket on their back.

They’ve recently purchased 440 brand new jackets from the Knights of Columbus, and over 180 had been distributed by noon on Monday.

Shayne Beatty and his wife were among those who went to the Indian Metis Friendship Centre on Monday. The couple from Deschambault Lake have four children and have been living in a hotel room as they are homeless.

“We’re having a hard time right now buying winter stuff because of the money, so this is very helpful,” he said.

Shirley Henderson, chair of the Women’s Commission, explained the initiative started when they received a call from the Knights of Columbus, and were given the opportunity to buy all the winter jackets at a reduced price (less than $5 each).

“It started off with the children but they also had some adults ones too that we bought,” Henderson said.

Henderson went on to explain everyone who had come through had expressed how grateful they were to get a decent jacket.

“It means a lot to us to help people and we had toques and mitts and scarves but I sent someone to go purchase some because we ran out,” she said.
