Glover defends claim of voting irregularities in Manitoba Tory leadership challenge

WINNIPEG — Shelly Glover says she believes a spreadsheet her campaign team received before Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson was named winner of the Progressive Conservative leadership vote is correct.

Glover, who lost last month to Stefanson by a narrow margin, alleges there were irregularities when ballots were counted and wants a judge to order a new vote.

She is in court defending her claim during cross-examinations of affidavits in the case.

The challenge is next scheduled for arguments before a judge on Dec. 10.

Progressive Conservative Party leadership has told court that the election was fair and the spreadsheet was not intended to be the final tally of votes.

Glover, a former member of Parliament, received 49 per cent of ballots in the Oct. 30 vote. 

When the results were announced, the ballots totalled 16,546, with Stefanson winning 51 per cent.

Glover says her team was given the spreadsheet in the morning with a smaller tally of total votes.

Party president Tom Wiebe told court Monday that campaign leaders were aware the spreadsheet was never intended to be the final total.

Wiebe, during cross-examination of his affidavit, defended the election count and said “that spreadsheet was … strictly to tell them who had voted.”
