MELFORT, Sask. – Most of Canada’s beef breeds are joining forces to advance the use of genetic data to improve Canadian beef production.

The agreement was announced at Agribition.

The chair of the Canadian Beef Improvement Network, Dave Sibbald, says a cloud services company called Xerris has been engaged to guide the various breeds to create a unified computer data platform.

“It is truly taking that genetic advantage that we have built here in Canada and leveraging it for even more growth not only here domestically but internationally as we move our product around the globe,” Sibbald said.

Canadian beef is some of the most sought after beef around the globe and this will help Canada deliver a more verified genetically enhanced product than other competitors.

“It is a customized platform that the primary producer can take back and truly design their production efficiencies, and evironmental efficiencies,” Sibbald said.

The enormous amount of data in the cattle industry is not currently on a platform that is shareable and leveragable.

The University of Regina is providing $180,000 to advance agriculture technology.

Agtech is a venture capital backed accelerator that assists early stage Canadian startups.

Dr. Chris Yost with the U of R says he is excited to use the University’s research infrastructure in the partnership.

He says the program will enable students and faculty to be part of the state of the art agtech projects and gain important experience.

The agreement was announced at Canadian Western Agribition.
