Prince Albert RCMP officers honoured for impaired driving prevention

Two members of the Prince Albert RCMP detachment have been recognized for their work keeping impaired drivers off the road.

Constables Erin Rogers and Keven Carreau received silver medals and certificates, as part of the Van de Vorst Family Award for Excellence in Prevention from MADD Canada and SGI. Rogers, a four year member of the RCMP, told paNOW the recognition means a lot to her.

“You know with someone getting charged and going to court, I’m not sure how much of a difference it’s making in everyone’s lives but if you pull over an impaired driver, you know you are potentially saving peoples’ lives,” she said.

Between April, 2020, and April 2021, Rogers arrested eight impaired drivers.

Over the same time period, Cst. Carreau arrested nine drivers.

“It’s days like today you see the real signficance of the work we are doing and how important it is for everyone in the province,” Carreau said.

The awards are handed out annually in memory of Jordan and Chanda Van de Vorst and their two children, Kamryn and Miguire, who lost their lives due to impaired driving. Karen Anthony-Burns with Prince Albert’s MADD chapter, was fighting back tears Friday when presenting the awards to Rogers and Carreau.

“And this is very personal for me as a mother who lost her son in 2010, in an alcohol related crash, and I just applaud your efforts in preventing tragedy for other families,” she said.

On Wednesday, three members of the Prince Albert Police Service were also honoured.
