Habscheid ejected, video goal feed breaks and goal disallowed in weird Raider loss to Warriors

Nov 24, 2021 | 10:06 PM

It was a weird and frustrating Wednesday for the Prince Albert Raiders.

Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid got ejected during a strange, four-minute delay to start the third period. The Raiders yelled at the video goal booth late in the second period, after Hayden Pakkala’s would-be tip-in was disallowed. And they put up 51 shots while surrendering just 33 in a 4-1 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The weirdness hit its peak at the beginning of the third period, as play was delayed for at least four minutes as the officials waited for a technical issue in the video goal booth to get sorted out. As both teams impatiently waited for play to resume, Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid was the most vocal and he was ejected from the game.

“The video was down, so both sides agreed, ‘let’s just play, it’s the same for everybody,’ and then made some interesting comments. I just wished them a Merry Christmas, and that was that,” Habscheid said.

The frustration started early, as the Warriors flooded the scoresheet in the first period. The Warriors won puck battles and rebounds in the Raiders’ zone directly before each of their four goals in the opening 20 minutes. Eric Alarie scored the first just 1:15 into the contest, set up Daemon Hunt at the 7:30 mark in front of the goal, then came away with the puck in scrums to lead to goals by Logan Doust at 14:37 and Maximus Wanner’s first WHL career goal at 17:26.

“They started with a goal quick and we couldn’t get our feet under us. Then after the first, I thought it was pretty good. The second and thirds were pretty good, but that’s the way it goes. The beat goes on,” Habscheid said.

Then the Raiders started to get even crankier at the end of the second period, when the Raiders’ power play goal was disallowed to a high stick. Hayden Pakkala thought he scored his fourth goal in his past six games. The Raiders received a bench minor for their protest of the disallowed goal, after a video review.

“We were getting some good chances, but their goalie was pretty hot down there. We just couldn’t put the puck in the net,” Pakkala said. “It was a pretty decent effort for the last two periods, I’d say.”

Then after a disallowed goal, Habscheid’s ejection, two crossbars hit in less than a minute and their 43rd shot on goal, the Raiders finally got their first goal. Remy Aquilon hit the crossbar, then Tyson Laventure got the Raiders on the board with 5:57 left in the third period.

Wanner’s goal chased Raider goaltender Carter Serhyenko from the game, after making nine saves on 13 shots. Tikhon Chaika entered the game as his replacement, stopping all 21 shots he faced in the final 42:34.

“I definitely saw the work paying off during the week, and he’s was good tonight and helped us out back there. Nothing else we could ask for, really,” Pakkala said of Chaika’s performance.

On the other side, 20-year-old Carl Tetachuk made 50 saves for the Warriors’ victory.

Capital City Challenge

And Prince Albert’s Tanner Howe was a late addition to the Canadian roster. Howe, who turns 16 on Nov. 28, has seven goals and 12 points in 17 games for the Regina Pats.

Raiders rookie Harrison Lodewyk is off attending the Hockey Canada Capital City Challenge, along with Warriors’ forward Brayden Yager and goaltender Jackson Unger.

And because Unger departed from the Warriors, Prince Albert Mintos goaltender Ty Shumanski took his spot on the Warriors’ bench as the team’s emergency backup goaltender.
