Snow Returns Tomorrow

Snow to arrive and stick around in Prince Albert tomorrow

Nov 9, 2021 | 10:26 AM

Snow is on the way to Prince Albert, and while this isn’t the first time this season that there’s been snow in the area, this will be the first time it sticks around for any length of time.

With a system pushing in from Alberta, and snow in the forecast three of four days from Wednesday through Saturday, it’s about to feel a lot more like winter in northern Saskatchewan. While some of that snow will melt away in the early going, there could be quite a buildup by Thursday night.

“It’s not a true Alberta Clipper, it’s kind of a hybrid version of that,” said Environment Canada regional meteorologist Terri Lang. “We will see snow starting in the overnight period, a slight chance of freezing rain, but if anything, it will be quite fleeting.”

Once that snow starts overnight it could be a while before it stops. According to Lang, they expect the snow to keep up all through the day before finally petering out Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and at least some of it will stick around.

“We’re trying to figure out how much it will snow just because temperatures will be hovering close to the freezing mark,” Lang said. “I think there will be some initial melting, but then the temperatures go below freezing so there will be some accumulation with this, upwards of 15 to 20 centimetres before all is said and done on Thursday.”

Though it won’t be a full-fledged Alberta Clipper, some nasty winds will come along with the snow as well. After a relatively warm fall, this will mark a quick change of pace and be the first gasp of winter in the north.

“It’s probably going to be around for a number of days just because the temperatures will be below freezing,” Lang said. “We’re keeping an eye on another system moving through central Saskatchewan on the weekend, but it’s a little far off, so we’ll see. But I think the snow is going to be around for a bit.”

Last November, there was a random stretch of unseasonably warm weather in which there were several places in Saskatchewan that saw 20 C highs. While there isn’t any of that on the horizon, there also doesn’t appear to be any of the abrupt drops to -20 C either.

“We are easing into winter,” Lang said. “It has been a very warm fall. Temperatures were running well above average in October. The farther north you got, the more above average they were, actually.”

Lang added today is a good day to get your winter tires on, locate your winter boots and clothes, and pull the shovels out of the shed, as it’s supposed to be fairly warm and sunny today.
