Inmate on the run fails to swerve around police

An escaped inmate, who was literally caught after nearly crashing into a police car, has had an extra 60 days tacked on to his sentence.

Kendall Moostoos, 21, appeared by phone Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court and entered guilty pleas to a number of charges including escaping lawful custody, giving a false name to police, and possession of stolen property.

According to the statement of facts read in court, Moostoos “walked away” from the re-integration unit at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre on Sept. 22. Just over a month later, while riding a bicycle down an alley in Saskatoon, nearly ran into a parked police vehicle, before sliding for a couple metres.

Upon being questioned, Moostoos said the brakes to the bicycle were not working but also gave the officers a false name. A search of the backpack he was carrying resulted in the discovery of a stolen blank cheque book, as well as pipes used to consume drugs.

While Friday’s appearance was not originally scheduled for sentencing, Moostoos told the judge he wanted to enter guilty pleas.

“I know what I’m doing,” he said.

As a matter of formality the judge is required to ensure an accused is entering a plea voluntarily and understands the charges. During the reading of the charges, Moostoos interrupted Judge Schiefner multiple times.

“Guilty ….I’m guilty,” he said, appearing more concerned with how much extra time he was going to spend behind bars, as opposed to any expression of remorse.

When asked by Judge Schiefner why he walked away from the low security facility, Moostoos said he did not know.

“It’s my stupidity,” he replied. “I’m not worried with that, I am worried about how much time do I got left.”

Moostoos, who has a history of property related crimes, and whose previous warrant was set to expire in February, will now have an extra 60 days added to his sentence.
