Mintos get pair of extra-time wins over Bears, Northern Bears fall to Stars

Both of Prince Albert’s U18 AAA teams were off on the road this weekend.

The Prince Albert Mintos played a ton of extra hockey against the Estevan Bears, picking up a 3-2 shootout win on Sunday, and a 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday.

On the girls’ side, the Prince Albert Northern Bears fell 3-2 in Saskatoon to the Stars.

After scoreless 40 minutes of play, both teams split four goals in the third period alone. Carter Onrait and Carson Birnie gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead, before Jacob Cossette and Nate Misskey both scored at the 15 and 16-minute marks to tie it up. Cossette and Travis Swanson both scored in the shootout to seal the victory.

Mintos 4 Estevan Bears 3 overtime

Travis Swanson was the overtime hero, as his extra frame goal gave the Mintos the full two points on Saturday against the Estevan Bears.

The Mintos were in trouble early as they trailed 3-1 after the opening 20 minutes. Estevan scored a pair of power play goals within the first 10 minutes of the contest. Carson Birnie had one of those, while also adding another goal near the end of the frame while even strength. Caden Drury had the other. Ashton Tait had the lone goal in the first period for the Mintos.

Nate Misskey scored on the power play for the Mintos in the second to get them back within striking distance, before Jacob Cossette scored with just 41 seconds left to force the extra frame. Then 3:43 into the extra period, Misskey set up Swanson for the game winner.

Stars 3 Northern Bears 2

The Saskatoon Stars defeated the Northern Bears 3-2 on Sunday at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon. The Bears got goals from Sophia Zuck and Taylor Leitch. Halle Helperl, Sage Babey scored for the Stars to tie the game after 40 minutes. Peyton Gabruck scored the winner in the third.
