Teacher Night

Historical Society to host special event tonight for Prince Albert educators

Oct 14, 2021 | 1:19 PM

For the first time, the Prince Albert Historical Society is hosting teacher night at the museum on River Street this evening.

The event is for teachers to learn more about the historical information and figures in Prince Albert, and to utilize that local knowledge in their classrooms.

“It is an open house for educators in our community for us to showcase some of the resources we have available for them at the historical society,” Joanna Wreakes, museum educator told paNOW. “I know the last year has been quite hard, we have not been able to have any field trips to the museum here.

“So, we have been working to develop some things that can go into the classrooms or can be done virtually.”

She added educators will be able to learn more about their new ‘suitcase program’ as well, which will go into schools, lesson plans for future field trips and how they relate to the curriculum, and can ask any other questions from herself or other curators.

“The suitcase that we have looks at the Second and First World War,” Wreakes said. “It is filled with artifacts from our education collection that students are able to handle. There is also contextual photographs from our archives, and information for students and teachers on the artifacts.”

Wreakes added educators can access the suitcase from the museum by signing up for it and booking it. They will be able to have it for two weeks in their classroom.

“We would love to see more teachers accessing our resources,” Wreakes said. “I think sometimes with us down here on the riverbank, people don’t always know we have these resources here available to them. Our goal is to get that information out there and see an uptick in teachers accessing our resources.”

The event will be taking place tonight from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Guests are welcome to come and go throughout the evening.

A proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event will be required upon entry from guests.
