Police investigate after pride flags torched at Prince Albert home

Sep 28, 2021 | 2:00 PM

Residents who live in the area of Prince Albert’s Branion Drive and McKay Drive are being encouraged to review their security camera footage, following what appears to be a targeted hate crime.

Around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, someone climbed onto the roof of a garage and burned the two pride flags attached to the structure. A spokesperson for the city’s fire department confirmed for paNOW there was no other damage. The fire itself was extinguished by the home owner.

Prince Albert Pride Board member Sarah Kraynick told paNOW she was saddened and hurt to hear about the incident.

“Unfortunately in Saskatchewan we’ve had a few of these incidents,” she said.

Kraynick noted the incident Tuesday morning appears to be isolated and is not typical of the community.

Board Chair Marc Roberts also provided a statement.

“While a cruel hate crime we would ask the community for forgiveness and healing prayers to grow beyond this incident,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Prince Albert Police Service confirmed they are investigating.
