Agriculture Roundup for Wednesday Sept. 22, 2021

Sep 22, 2021 | 2:34 PM

The federal election saw little change across the country.

The Liberals are back with a minority government and the incumbent agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau was re-elected in her Quebec riding.

Conservative Agriculture critic Lianne Rood was re-elected in southwest Ontario as was NDP agriculture critic Alistair MacGregor in British Columbia.

The seat totals for all the major parties are very similar to the last election only two years ago, including all 14 Saskatchewan ridings going Conservative.

President of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities Ray Orb said an election during a pandemic wasn’t wise.

“It cost over $600 million so it just really seemed like it wasn’t well advised to have an election during these times,” Orb said.

Improving infrastructure will continue to be the main ask of the federal Liberal government.

“Roads and bridges are the most important to us when it comes to infrastructure but telecommunications is important too,” Orb said.

More funding has been promised but Orb is interested to see where that goes.

The Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) Semi-Annual General Meeting and Producer Town Hall will both be held virtually on Thursday, September 30.

The general session for delegates to participate will run from 1 to 3 p.m., and then following that, from 3 to 5 p.m., they will host a producer Town Hall, with all producers welcome to attend and participate.

The Town Hall will mostly be discussing the new ag-recovery drought assistance program and the Canada-Alberta livestock feed assistance initiative.
