MELFORT, Sask. – Manitoba has become the first province to establish an organic check off.

Producers of Manitoba organic cereals, oilseeds and pulses will remit .5 per cent of gross sales on a quarterly basis to the Manitoba Organic Alliance (MOA).

The proceeds will be used to support organic research, extension, and market development initiatives, along with specific organic sector development activities designed to build resilience on organic farms.

The new regulations came into effect Aug. 12.

A new swine diagnostic extension service being offered by Prairie Diagnostic Services (PDS) is helping veterinarians and farmers translate diagnostic results into treatment.

CEO Dr. Yanyun Huang said professors are going to take and answer client phone calls and emails.

“If veterinarians are facing a case that they’re not quite sure what to submit as diagnostic samples and what tests to request, Dr. Harding and Dr. Costa can help them with that,” Huang said.

Assistance will also be provided for complex clinical cases where a veterinarian needs help putting reports, data and results together.

Huang said the new service will further link animal health to the diagnostic laboratory and more fully translate the diagnostic information into action for veterinarians and farmers.

Prairie Diagnostic Services is a full-service animal health diagnostic laboratory that provides diagnostic services for all animal species and primarily serves clinical veterinarians but also animal owners and researchers.
