MELFORT, Sask. – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is forecasting a significant drop in crop supplies due to drought.

As harvest continues the report said there is still uncertainty regarding yield and production estimates.

While it will be some time before final results are known, Canada is forecast to harvest 71.8 million metric tonnes (mmt) of all principal field crops this year. That’s a drop of 27 per cent from 2020-21 crop year.

Canola production is pegged at 15 mmt, down 20 per cent from last year.

Nationally the wheat number is 20.2 mmt which is a drop of 43 per cent.

Pork producers are being encouraged to discuss issues of concern with their candidates in the federal election.

Manitoba Pork has listed trade agreements, relations with China, improving business risk management programs and protecting the health of Canada’s swine herd as the top concerns.

General Manager Cam Dahl addressed these concerns through an article published in several community newspapers.

Dahl said it is time for producers to talk to candidates of all parties.

“We have 14 MP’s in Manitoba, or will have after the election, and I would like to see every single one of them, no matter what party they represent stand up and acknowledge and understand how important agriculture is so engage with the candidates,” Dahl said.

Most constituencies have all-candidates meetings. Dahl said it would be great if those halls were full of farmers.

Dahl said this is a time when all politicians are listening, and they will likely take the comments they hear back to Ottawa after the election.

Dahl said policy is made by people who show up and agriculture needs to show up.
