MELFORT, Sask. — Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP) in Manitoba said the next federal government should focus on four key areas.

KAP is calling on the federal political parties to focus on business risk management programs to support producers, the role of producers as environmental stewards, economic development, and public trust in agriculture.

KAP president Bill Campbell said the ongoing drought conditions pose a significant challenge to Manitoba’s agriculture and agri-food industry.

“It is important for every political party to recognize the importance of agriculture at a time when producers in all sectors and all regions of our province are struggling,” Campbell said.

Campbell said improvements in these areas will be essential to the success of agriculture in Manitoba.

The Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA) said trade is vital to Canada’s post-pandemic recovery.

CAFTA president Dan Darling said the organization has released its five ideas for the next federal government that are practical, achievable, and long overdue.

“They will help Canada seize opportunity and create the jobs and prosperity that are so critical to helping us recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” Darling said. “Agrifood exporters stand ready to work with the next government and all parliamentarians to help Canada thrive.”

The top recommendations for federal parties include resolving the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement implementation issues and review free trade agreements, create a chief of Trade Implementation at Global Affairs Canada for agri-food exports, establishment of the WTO’s Appellate Body, immediately launch trade talks with the United Kingdom and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and promote Canada’s science based regulatory system.

CAFTA members, which includes farmers, ranchers, and food manufacturers, contribute nearly $100 billion to Canada’s economy each year.

Fertilizer Canada has named its new board chair.

Fedorchuk has been a member of the board since 2016

“The fertilizer sector — and the world in which it operates — is evolving,” Fedorchuk said in a news release. “I look forward to working with the members and staff at Fertilizer Canada as we elevate programming, policies and communications initiatives around the business of fertilizer.

Fedorchuk has worked at Mosaic for over a decade, having had several different roles within the organization.

In addition to her role on the Fertilizer Canada Board, Fedorchuk also serves as a Board Member for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.
