MELFORT, Sask. — Western Canadian Wheat Growers (WCWG) has sought legal opinions on the issue of grain contracts.

WCWG President Gunter Jochum said the groups has heard the concern expressed by farmers about the administration fees charged by some companies when a contract can’t be filled.

He said they have spoken to lawyers about those concerns and will make the information available to their members.

WCWG is a member based organization and does not collect checkoff fees.

Canadian chicken sector continues to enjoy popularity among consumers, according to a recent survey.

The Canadian chicken sector operates under the system of supply management, meaning farmers match production to meet Canadian demand.

The 5,000 survey respondents from across the country shared their voting intentions in the survey, and government support for supply management and the Canadian chicken sector remained strong.

Chicken Farmers of Canada chair Benoît Fontaine said voters have indicated it is important to them that the government support chicken farmers.

“Canadians have indicated they don’t want to see any more access granted to the Canadian chicken market in future trade agreements, nor mislabelled broiler chicken crossing the border,” Fontaine said.

The survey revealed 82 per cent of Canadians want the government to crack down on mislabelled chicken from the U.S., 79 per cent want the government to support chicken farm operations impacted by the pandemic and 72 per cent agree government should not concede any further access to the Canadian chicken market in future trade agreements.

There are roughly 2,800 chicken farmers in Canada.
