Children learn about different cultures at Prince Albert’s Multicultural Council summer camp

The Prince Albert Multicultural Council held their annual day camp this week at Little Red River Park that was full of learning about cultures from around the world.

Over the past couple of days, campers aged seven-12 have learned more about Indigenous, Filipino and Indian culture among others, Jayne Remenda, diversity event coordinator for the Multicultural council told paNOW.

“The camp is designed to connect children with local and Indigenous culture,” Remenda said. “The camp is multicultural, so the presentations have been from various cultures and communities.”

They have heard nothing but positive feedback from the parents of the campers as they say their kids are learning lots of new things for the first time.

“The theme of this year is respect,” Remenda said. “We started off talking about the need to respect each other, as well the environment and the community we live in.

“Then we moved into individual uniqueness, and about how everyone is different. That opened up the conversation about how we meet new people that come from different countries, different cultures and religions and so there is differences in the food people eat and the way they dress, and we need to respect that.”

One of the campers, 12-year-old Vraj Patel said they have learned a lot at the camp, while having fun as well.

“We have been learning a lot about First Nations, and different cultures, because Canada is a multicultural country,” Patel said. “Yesterday we learned about Nigeria. [The presenter] told us a few stories and we learned a little bit about the language and about some of the cities.

“I really like learning about cultures because it shows how much diversity is in our world and how much we’re not a like. It’s very interesting to see how different people are in different countries and cities. You can be in the same country, but in different cities there can be a different culture. The food can be different, the cuisine, the culture, the dances. Learning about it is so unique and can really benefit you in future life.”

This is the second year the multicultural council have held a summer camp, they will also hold a winter camp that will have jigging, and dog sledding.
