Provincial ball hits Prince Albert for first time in two years

For the first time since the 2019 season, Softball Saskatchewan Provincial Championships are coming back to Prince Albert shale.

The U-12 Girls A North and Open Championships are starting on Friday on both Prime Ministers’ Park and Crescent Acres.

Prince Albert U12 Aces coach Kalen Kovitch said it’s an exciting time to get back to the diamond.

“To have a high-level competition, even if it is U12, it’s exciting for our organization and our city. We’re looking forward to hosting, that’s for sure.”

The tournament itself will be run much like a pre-pandemic tournament. With provincial restrictions having been removed since July 11, teams and players are now able to interact a lot more. Kovitch said that after a pre-tournament meeting among the tournament’s coaches, shaking hands after games and giving high fives will be allowed.

“[Before,] we were just doing the three cheers and a wave from across the diamond saying, ‘thanks for the game.’ Well, it was unanimously decided that this would be the first time that we will shake hands, get to say ‘good game,’ give high-fives and do it the traditional way,” Kovitch said. “Even that last final restriction is no longer in place, so it’s going to be cool to see. I’m excited about it.”

Kovitch said the U12 A Aces have adjusted through the unusual year very well, and have hopes to earn a medal. The Aces won the bronze medal at the Shaye Amundson Memorial Tournament earlier this month.

“Our girls have had a different kind of year,” Kovitch said. “Obviously, we had a lot of practice at the start. We were kind of waiting for the government to say it’s okay to start doing this and competing again. But once that happened, we got off the ground running.”

This weekend, the U16 A Girls Aces will be vying for the provincial championship in Saskatoon, while the U14 A Girls Aces will do so in Regina. On the boys side, the U14 Astros will play in Shellbrook in the Open Championships, while the U12 Open Boys Championships in Delisle will feature the U12 Astros.

Prince Albert will also host the U16 Open Boys Championships from Aug. 6-8.
