Plan for public washroom approved for downtown Prince Albert

Jul 14, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Prince Albert residents may see a major improvement to downtown in the near future.

A public washroom was brought up at the council meeting on Monday night and will now be further researched.

Coun. Charlene Miller said the idea came from recent travels to larger cities.

“We see things in larger cities that we bring back and try to implement in our city on a smaller scale,” Miller told paNOW. “It would be a positive impact for residents who are walking or biking the Rotary Trail that need to stop and use the washroom.”

Not only would the public washroom benefit people on the Rotary Trail, but it may also draw a few more people to downtown events as well.

“We usually have big events that happen, so a public washroom would be a great thing for outdoor events,” Miller said.

According to executive director of Prince Albert’s Downtown Business Improvement District, Carolyn Carleton, a public washroom has been brought up in the past.

“It has been mentioned. Right now, there is not a lot of options for public washrooms downtown, you either go to the library or go to the mall,” Carleton said. “Even when we hosted street fair, we would have to bring in porta potties because it is not a service offered.

“It’s something that is a necessity for everyone. With the amount of people who use Rotary Trail, or visit downtown, and the events we are having, it would be a benefit.

It has not yet been decided where the best location would be for the washroom, but there are a few options.

“The city owns an empty lot along the river bank, that would definitely be good because anyone who uses Rotary trail would have access,” Carleton said. “There are a few options downtown of city owned lots that can be utilized. I think there are a few opportunities that can be explored, but I definitely see it as a need.”

The next stage will be a report from administration which will include a few examples of other public washrooms and a budget deliberation on the cost of building and maintaining it.
