Cameco announces return to production at Cigar Lake uranium mine

Jul 4, 2021 | 10:10 AM

Cameco has announced the 230 workers evacuated from their Cigar Lake uranium mine because of the Briggs fire can return to the site.

According to a media release Sunday, the company is in the process of transporting employees back and will return to production later in the week.

The workers were evacuated on July 1 as a precaution due the wildfire burning in the area.

β€œIn consultation with provincial wildfire management officials from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, we believe the risk to Cigar Lake posed by the fire has now subsided,” as stated in the release.

The mining company explained operations can resume because of improved weather and smoke conditions, equipment remaining intact and the minimal likelihood of further road closures. They will do a final inspection of equipment over the next few days to prepare for a return to operations.
