MELFORT, Sask. – Prairie farmers will have a chance to get together for an event recognizing their hard work.

The Thanks for Farming tour will be July 8 and 9 at Lethbridge, Alta., July 13 and 14 at Swift Current, Sask., and July 28 and 29 in Brandon, Man.

Organizer Jeremy Matuszewski said this is the second year for the event. It was so well received they decided to try it again this year.

“Last summer we ran nine of these across western Canada and one in the fall in Red Deer, Alta.,” Matuszewski told farmnewsNOW. “It’s back by popular demand back because we still want to say thank you. We’re holding three more this summer.”

Matuszewski said they wanted to continue connecting with farmers as COVID-19 prevented large gatherings.

“There’s a lot of good people in this world and we recognize them, police, firefighters, nurses, doctors, etc. But nobody ever says thanks to the farmers that I’ve seen firsthand over the last eight years, how hard they work, to feed the world and to feed our country,” Matuszewski said.

The event includes of variety of speakers who will discuss the latest in ag innovation, mental health, and farming.

“At all three events, we’re going to have the speaker talking about cover crops and another speaker that’s going to be joining us talking about transition and succession planning,” he said. “During lunch, Lesley Kelly will talk about acceptance and understanding about mental health and agriculture.”

After more time to visit the trade show there will be a presentation from Twitter sensation @QuickDickMcDick.

“He’s the guy that joined us last fall and has a really funny, great perspective on life and on farming. The title of his presentation is Life from the Perspective of a Saskatchewan Agricultural Technician,” he added.

Matuszewski said this isn’t only about farmers but also a way to support agricultural communities that have been built by those farmers.

“All of the proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated back to local charities. We’re going to be getting our meals from local restaurants the same as we did last year. There will be local breweries involved, ” Matuszewski said. “The goal behind this is to say thank you to the farmers, but also to support those communities and businesses that have been hurting during the pandemic.”
