MELFORT, Sask. – Indigenous initiatives will receive $4 million in federal money to help increase participation in the agriculture and agri-food sector.

There are a total of 16 projects including one on Cowessess First Nation east of Regina, Sask.

Chief Cadmus Delorme said the long-term goal for 4C Farms is to build a fleet of grain farming equipment.

4-C Farms received $954,000 to reintroduce grain farming as a viable business and to finalize a business plan so that Cowessess First Nation can expand its farming operation to 2,000 acres.

The Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) will be contributing to prairie research.

WGRF will direct $253,000 to Farming Smarter for the purchase of a plot seeder and plot combine.

Farming Smarter is a not-for-profit research organization located near Lethbridge, Alta.

Executive Director Ken Coles said the mission is to provide cost-effective research, demonstrations, and extension for producers to facilitate greater returns on their investment.

A Saskatchewan-raised charity steer has once again raised a lot of money for a worthy charity.

The Wild Rose 4-H Beef Club took on the role of raising this year’s steer and will give the money to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan. The money will be used to purchase a 4-D CT Simulator which helps set the best plan for radiation therapy.

A total of $49,930 was raised through a Dutch auction with Prince Albert Canadian Tire Store owner Malcolm Jenkins topping up that donation to $100,000.
