P.A. lacrosse with a ‘satisfying scramble’ to get games and tournaments organized

Like a lot of sports trying to get back in the swing of things, the Saskatchewan lacrosse community found themselves with a good problem to have.

As the Government of Saskatchewan announced they would ease restrictions, organizations like the Prince Albert Lacrosse Association have been busy getting games and perhaps tournaments in order for this season. Games can occur as early as Sunday, while tournaments could start as early as June 20.

“It’s been a satisfying scramble. It’s been great news that we’re able to start sooner than expected, but it has put us in a situation where we’ve had to make plans rather quickly,” PA lacrosse president Javan Bexson said. “But we’ve got a great supportive board at PA Lacrosse, and everyone’s been able to work together to support athletes getting back to what looks like a more normal lacrosse situation. We’re very happy.”

In field lacrosse, contact practices will start in the coming days, with games starting as early as Wednesday, and playing locally throughout June. Some of the older teams like the U18 and U15 and perhaps the U13 club could travel to other communities like Saskatoon, Regina and Yorkton.

Bexson said there could also be provincial tournaments either late in the summer or the September long weekend.

The indoor box lacrosse season could be a little fuzzier, especially since the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League cancelled their junior season. But, last week’s restrictions have made some sort of action possible, even for the indoor version of the game.

“They’re still hopeful to have some potential matches. I think they just cancelled what would be the ‘normal season’ but still hopeful to make something or salvage some portion of what they could for gameplay,” Bexson said. “Potentially in Stage Two, they could have some exhibition games.”
