Celebrating Catholic Education Week

May 18, 2021 | 9:38 AM

Catholic Schools throughout Saskatchewan celebrated Catholic Education Week from May 9-16th.

The week kicked off with a provincial proclamation by Dustin Duncan the Minister of Education.

Light of Christ Catholic Schools celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm.

At Notre Dame School each classroom created bulletin boards of flowers to connect with and to share our theme of “Nurturing Hope”. It was a great privilege to dive into this theme of hope at a time when we are all searching for ways to expand the light of our hope in the day-to-day challenges of our lives. Our staff and students enjoyed the daily videos which provided virtual introductions and scripture shared by our priests who serve the staff, students, and communities of our Light of Christ Catholic Schools.

The students enjoyed learning through engaging in stories and activities that corresponded with each theme. We adopted a theme song of hope, which we played daily as we tossed a beach ball in each classroom to build connection and to delight in the positivity of dancing and gratitude for being able to move our bodies to the music.

To begin the week, Notre Dame School students decorated pots and popsicle sticks to prepare the soil, as we reflected on preparing the soil of our hearts to grow in love and service of others. We planted flower seeds on Tuesday and enjoyed a popsicle treat to symbolize the seeds of hope we can plant in our world by the simplest acts of kindness.

On Wednesday, we made friendship bracelets as we reflected on the importance of building up connection and relationships. A virtual liturgy with Bishop Mark Hagemoen and a fruit snack treat to remind us of the fruits of the spirit such as joy, peace, kindness, and gentleness were our focus for Thursday. On Friday, we joined our voices in prayer for a Living Rosary, to reflect on the mysteries of our life and faith and to remember our sense of wonder at the marvels that are all around us.

As the Catholic Education Week celebration came to a close at Notre Dame School, students received a small bag of “treats” and “treasures” that commemorated the themes and learnings from the week. We were deeply grateful at this opportunity to celebrate our faith and to connect, in the ways that were possible, as a school community.

Our Catholic Education Week celebrations and reflections were a wonderful reminder of how blessed we are to have the gift of Catholic Education, as we continue seeking out ways to nurture hope and light in our youth and throughout our larger community.
