Raiders’ Allan and Team Canada ready for U18 worlds semifinal matchup vs. Sweden

May 5, 2021 | 12:00 PM

Prince Albert Raider defenceman Nolan Allan and the rest of Team Canada are preparing for an intriguing semifinal matchup this afternoon at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championships in Frisco, Texas.

They will take on Sweden at 4 p.m., with the winner moving on to the gold medal match on Thursday.

What makes the matchup interesting is Sweden finished right behind Canada in their group with a 3-1 record, but their only defeat of the tournament so far was a 12-1 trouncing by Canada. Allan scored his lone goal of the tournament in that game on April 27.

Since then, Sweden has won all their games, 3-1 over Switzerland, 7-0 over Latvia, and 5-2 over the United States. They also defeated Belarus 5-1 before their matchup against Canada.

Canada remains the lone undefeated team in the tournament and has been dominant so far. They finished the preliminary stages with a 4-0 record, before a 10-3 defeat over the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Monday. Canada has outscored their opposition 38-8 so far in the tournament.

And Prince Albert Raiders prospect Uladzislau Shyla, the captain of Team Belarus, had three assists in the five tournament games before Belarus was eliminated by the Russians on Monday.
