Plant Your Spinach Now

May 5, 2021 | 10:02 AM

If spinach is a regular item on your grocery list, try growing your own.

This is an easy veg for novice gardeners.

Sow seeds directly into the garden now or into containers on your balcony.

It only takes 4 – 6 weeks from seeding to harvest. All you need is a package of seeds. It prefers full sun but can tolerate part shade.

For a consistent supply seed a short row (or one container) every 2 weeks from now until mid August. Plants seeded in July and August may need to harvested as baby spinach as heat tends to make spinach bolt (produce flowers and seeds).

There are lots of cultivars to choose from: “Tyee’ and ‘Sardinia’ are just two.
