SCFPA disappointed no plans of Francophone school announced in provincial budget

The Société Canadienne-Française de Prince Albert (SCFPA) is once again voicing their displeasure towards the provincial government after they were left out of the budget earlier this month.

According to a media release, the SCFPA is disappointed there was no plan for a new francophone community school in Prince Albert, which the society has been working on since 2018.

A business plan the SCFPA has presented is to buy and transform the Rivier Academy which has been closed since 2017. They explained a business case and cost analysis to renovate the Rivier Academy into a school was sent in February 2020 to the Minister of Education.

“We have cooperated completely with the Government of Saskatchewan on this project, have met with two different Ministers of Education, have identified new and traditional funding programs and still do not have a clear commitment moving forward”, Estelle Hjertaas, president of the SCFPA, said in a media release. “We understand that the file is on Premier Moe’s desk since well before the budget. We reiterate our previous request to meet the Premier and explain to him directly the economic advantages of this initiative.”

In 2019, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Fransaskois school board signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a francophone school in the city. In June 2020, the government also announced the Rivier Academy was still on the table and being considered as an option.

The SCFPA also said since last year’s budget they’ve done more research on the project and explained it makes it a more reliable plan.
