MELFORT, Sask. — The Agriculture Carbon Alliance (ACA) has added new members as the agriculture sector stands together and works collaboratively on environment issues.

The Canadian Forage and Grassland Association, the National Sheep Network, the National Cattle Feeders’ Association, and the Dairy Farmers of Canada have joined the group.

The ACA was formed to represent farmers and ranchers on carbon pricing.

Other members include the Canadian Canola Growers Association, Canadian Federation of Agriculture, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, Grain Growers of Canada, Canadian Pork Council, Egg Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada, Canadian Horticultural Council, and the Canadian Egg Hatching Producers.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has announced an endowed chair in wetland and waterfowl conservation at the University of Saskatchewan (USask).

Avian ecologist Mitch Weegman said he will take on a teaching position and a research program that addresses environmental issues in the Department of Biology.

“Saskatchewan, and more broadly the Canadian prairies and parklands, are legendary for wetlands and waterfowl,” Weegman said. “Even as a kid, I read about and dreamed of visiting these landscapes. Launching the chair is the honour of my lifetime and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Weegman was recruited from the University of Missouri, where he served as assistant professor of avian ecology. His new role will include the training of future scientists, conservationists, and wildlife managers studying at USask.

Weegman begins his new position on July 1.

Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance (SMHI) will continue its support of STARS air ambulance.

CEO Rodney Schoettler said the four-year commitment of $1 million is the second donation from the company.

“We all live and work in communities that benefit from the service that STARS provides. Our motivation is to give something back to the residents of Saskatchewan and what better group to do that with than STARS?” Schoettler said in a news release.

The donation will be directed toward the operations of STARS’ bases in Regina and Saskatoon.
