Cancelling school break, delayed election: Provinces mull ways to slow COVID spread

Feb 11, 2021 | 10:30 AM

Newfoundland and Labrador’s chief electoral officer is calling for the province’s election to be delayed and Ontario officials are to decide whether to cancel March break as provinces mull ways to lessen the spread of COVID-19.

Bruce Chaulk has sent a letter to the Maritime province’s leaders saying the chief medical officer of health should use her powers to delay Saturday’s vote.

His plea comes as provincial health authorities reported a record 53 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce is also expected to provide more details after getting advice from that province’s top doctor on whether cancelling March break would curb spread of the virus.

The province’s largest teachers’ union has called on the government to keep March break in place, saying students, families and teachers need the time off.

Over the past seven days across the country, there have been a total of 24,331 new infections and the seven-day rolling average of new cases is 3,476.
