Prince Albert’s own Ethan Smith will be heading to the University of Saskatchewan to play for the Huskies men’s volleyball team.

The St. Mary Marauder said he was recruited by the head coach of the Huskies after seeing him play and signed with the team in December. He will be playing the position of libero for the Huskies.

“I was super stoked,” Smith said. “My dad played there so it’s great to follow in his footsteps and go on to play at the next level.”

Although it will be a new experience for Smith, he said he knows other future teammates who have recently signed.

“It’s always been a huge goal of mine to go on to play at the USport level, feels great to finally accomplish that,” he said.

Head coach of the St. Mary Marauders senior boys’ volleyball team, Rene Quintal, who was able to coach Smith for three seasons said he was happy for him.

“I know playing volleyball at the post-secondary level [has] been a goal of his I think probably since Grade 9,” Quintal said. “I’m really happy for Ethan to be able to get rewarded for all his hard work.”

In terms of commitment to the sport Quintal said it’s been Smith’s priority. On top of playing for the Marauders, the played on a club team as well as playing for the Saskatchewan provincial team.

“Basically, it was a triple prioritization where he was playing the sport almost 10 months a year and on top of that doing quite a bit of work in the weight room to work on his physical strength especially in the last 18 months,” he said.

“He’s getting rewarded with an opportunity to play for a top-notch program,” Quintal added.
