Maple Leaf Foods said it plans to spend $100 million to increase tempeh production capacity with the acquisition of a food processing plant in Indianapolis.

The company said the purchase is expected to close in early April followed by the installation of tempeh production equipment with initial capacity of roughly 4.5 million kilograms.

Maple Leaf said initial production at the plant is targeted to begin in the first half of 2022 and it is expected to employ 115 people when fully operational.

Tempeh is a plant-based protein made from soybeans.

Canada and the United Kingdom (UK) have reached an arrangement for trade of organic food.

The United Kingdom-Canada Organic Equivalence Arrangement came into effect on Jan. 1.

The arrangement allows organic products certified under the Canada Organic Regime or the UK organic system to be sold and labelled as organic in Canada and the UK.

It applies to agricultural and processed products of plant origin, livestock and livestock products grown or produced within either country or whose final processing or packaging occurs within either country.

Last year Canada exported approximately $9.3 million of certified organic products to the UK.

Registration is now open for the 2021 Livestock Care Conference.

It will start online March 4 and continue every Tuesday and Thursday in March.

Organizers with Alberta Farm Animal Care said the theme is ‘Are We There Yet?’ and speaks to not only the shift from a chaotic 2020 to 2021, but the attitude towards the welfare of livestock through the years.

Early bird prices are in place until Jan. 15. Registration is available through EventBrite.

The Alberta Wheat Commission online annual general meeting is set for Jan. 27.

It begins at 10 a.m. and will wrap up at 11:15 a.m.

Anyone interested can register, but only farmers that have grown wheat in Alberta and paid a service charge since August of 2018 can vote on resolutions.

Registration and more information is available here.

Alberta Pulse Growers will hold its virtual annual general meeting Jan. 27 from 3 to 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to log in 10 minutes early so the meeting can start on time.

Registration for anyone wanting to vote and more information can be found at albertapulse.com.
