Due to Covid 19 restrictions, the family held a private service on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, which commenced at 2:00 pm at Calvary United Church. For those who were unable to attend, or wish to view the service again, there is a link below to click and download the service.
Helen Mary Christensen (Chorney) was born June 22, 1955 at Rose Valley, SK to Anastasia and Michael Chorney. She loved growing up on the farm, spending time with close and extended family, and playing basketball for her high school team. She moved to Saskatoon to attend the University of Saskatchewan, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. It was there she met the love of her life, Brian. They began dating in February and then married November 13, 1976. So many people loved them they ended up having two wedding receptions to celebrate their union. Helen and Brian moved to Prince Albert in 1977. Helen and Brian had their first child, Amanda, in 1981. She completed a second degree, a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Regina while pregnant with their son, Stephen, born in 1984.
Spending time with family was a priority with Helen. She took every opportunity to attend special events, family reunions, camping trips, and everyday activities for her kids. She influenced the lives of many through her work with Social Services, Mobile Crisis, and Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division. She was responsible for the development and implementation of the Victim Services Program for the Prince Albert Police Service. She was Coordinator of this program for 24 years. She loved being a social worker, and the opportunity it gave her to help people through difficult times. Helen retired at the age of 62, to spend more time with her grandchildren, Joah (8), Hollis (5), and Kyle (3), and to travel more with Brian. Her grand boys were her pride and joy, and brought her so many laughs and smiles. She would drop everything for the chance to babysit. Helen and Brian were able to visit numerous countries and loved their yearly trip to Mexico. Helen enjoyed exploring new locations, planning trips, traveling, and floating on the lazy river in Puerto Vallarta for hours on end. She also loved getting lost on road trips, sailing with Brian, quilting, reading, and spending time at their trailer at Candle Lake. Family and friends were the most important things in her life. She never forgot a name, or a face – and she would make everyone she met feel special after just one conversation. Helen was a living example of love, care, and compassion.
Helen passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on December 23, 2020 at the age of 65. She had successfully beaten pancreatic cancer, and was ready to fight a second cancer. In the last month of her life, however, she was surprised by a third primary cancer. It is fitting that it would take a rare medical circumstance to slow her down. She left the earth the way she lived – full of love, laughter, strength, and surrounded by family. Helen will be forever missed and forever loved.
Helen Mary Christensen is survived by her loving husband Brian; their children and grandchildren – Amanda Szeszorak (Christopher and son Kyle) and Stephen Christensen (Morgan and sons Joah and Hollis); her siblings, Mike Chorney (Margaret), Janis Olesko (Joe), Doris Wilson (John), Eugene Chorney (Ruth), and Michalene Adair (Mark); her parents-in-law, Melvin and Evelyn Christensen; her siblings-in-law – Heather Christensen, Bevan Christensen (Michele), and Jim Christensen (Cindy); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other special relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Anastasia Chorney, her brother-in-law, Wayne Christensen, and two special nieces, Pamela Christensen and Lana Marie Wilson.
A Private Family Service will be held at Calvary United Church. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
