U of S expects to continue remote learning through spring, summer terms

Remote learning at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) looks like it’s here to stay, at least until the Fall 2021 term.

That’s the expectation of the institution, who gave a prepared email statement to 650 CKOM Monday.

“The university plans to formally announce the mode of program delivery for the Spring and Summer terms, running May through August 2021, early in the new year. The expectation is that the mode of delivery for the Spring and Summer terms, which are significantly smaller than the Fall and Winter terms with regards to class numbers and student counts, will remain primarily remote based on current available forecasts for continued COVID-19 pandemic impacts through the first half of 2021,” the statement reads.

Academic programming currently for the Winter 2021 term, which wraps up in April, is primarily remote, according to the U of S. Courses or labs that require in-person instruction are still being held on campus, however.

As for the Fall 2021 term, there’s nothing set in stone as of yet. But the U of S is hopeful.

“The university expects to make a formal announcement on academic program delivery for the Fall term by May 2021. A May 2021 announcement allows for additional time for more accurate forecasts of the COVID-19 pandemic for Fall, and to better understand the potential positive impacts of expected widespread vaccinations over the next several months. The university hopes for a return to a more traditional Fall term for 2021 but will be planning for all potential scenarios,” Monday’s statement reads.

On March 13, the U of S announced that it would suspend three days worth of classes before a remote mode of delivery, which began March 19, 2020.
