MELFORT, Sask. – The federal government will spend $3.7 million for two programs to help farmers manage risk.

AgriCompetitiveness Program will receive $1.8 million to assist farmers in building their business management skills.

In the second project, Farm Management Canada will use the $1.8 million contribution to provide training and education to producers and industry professionals to develop risk management plans and help farmers manage the wide range of risks they face every day.

New chair Andre Harpe of Valhalla Centre, Alta. said he looks forward to representing grain farmers across the country.

“Our new executive team will continue to push an ambitious agenda, and advocate for the needs of our critically important sector to policy makers and legislators,” Harpe said in a news release.

Harpe replaced outgoing chair Jeff Nielsen who has been on the GGC executive since 2015, having served as chair for the past two years.

Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola, Alberta Pulse Growers and the Alberta Wheat Commission have launched albertabluebook.com, the new website for Alberta’s Crop Protection Guide.

The Blue Book website is now accepting advanced pre-orders of the 2021 Blue Book for shipping in March.

While the commissions are producing the 2021 Blue Book and paper copies will be available in March, the commissions felt it was key to offer an advanced ordering system for deliveries in the spring.

This new feature allows retailers, agronomists, and farmers to place their 2021 Blue Book orders well in advance of the busy spring season.

Registration is now open for the Banff Pork Seminar on the event’s web site, banffpork.ca.

It will run from Jan. 5 to 7.

Sessions on mental health, African Swine Fever, and management are all part of the program.

The 2021 Alberta Agronomy Update is going virtual.

The joint venture from Alberta Canola, Alberta Pulse Growers, Alberta Barley, and the Alberta Wheat is set for Jan. 19 and 20.

The lineup of speakers is still being finalized and a full agenda is due out soon.
