Breathing Easy: three city buildings win clean air awards

Dec 4, 2020 | 12:00 PM

For the second year in a row, municipal buildings in Prince Albert have been recognized for maintaining a clean and healthy indoor environment.

The Alfred Jenkins Field House, the EA Rawlinson Centre and city hall received the 2020 North American Filtration Association (NAFA) clean air awards.

Scot Johnson, manager of BGE Indoor Air Quality Solutions, played a large part in helping the city earn the awards, in part by training five city maintenance workers through NAFA. He said the three locations had been working towards achieving this prestigious award for several years.

According to Johnson there are many factors to consider when being nominated.

“We look at filtration efficiency, system integrity which is how well its looked after. There is a lot of extra training, a lot of extra records and it’s all about working safely and keeping the air quality as good as it possibly can be within the perimeters of the system and showing absolute due diligence,” Johnson said.

It’s the second year the field house has been recognized with the award.

“The NAFA Clean Air Award gives members of the general public and our facility user’s confidence they are breathing the cleanest air possible when they are in these buildings,” Neil Hamilton, maintenance coordinator for the City of Prince Albert said. “Especially in our current times battling a pandemic, it is comforting to know the air in these buildings is as clean as you would find in a hospital setting.”

Of the 48 NAFA Clean Air Awards presented in 2020, 16 were to buildings in Canada.
