St. Benedict farmer named Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan champion

MELFORT, Sask. – St. Benedict, Sask. grain and broiler chicken farmer is this year’s Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan champion.

Tiffany Martinka is a participant in the Chicken Farmers of Canada’s Young Farmers Program and has worked on numerous collaborations with the Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan, Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan, and Canadian Food Focus.

Through these roles she has provided consumers with information on how their food is grown. She has a strong presence on social media where she shares stories about life on the farm, production practices, food safety measures and the challenges of farming.

It makes for a busy life but Martinka said she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It can take a lot of work to create content and open up about your farm and your family life,” Martinka said. “Every so often I stop to reflect and ask myself is it worth all of this work to open up and share. Every time I ask myself that question the answer is always yes.”

Martinka said she feels honoured to have been selected for the award.

“We have such a good news story to tell in agriculture, and I feel compelled to share that story. I want to share the beauty of the family farm with everybody,” she said.

Kim Hill with the Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan said she is thrilled Martinka was selected to receive this honour.

“She is a leader in our farming community. Through sharing her farming experiences, it has brought a face to our producers and has provided a lot of support for other farmers to share their farming stories,” Hill said.

Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan executive director Clinton Monchuk said he is happy to recognize people like Martinka.

“Consumers today have very few opportunities to visit farms or speak directly to farmers, and that means the work Tiffany does to share her story is vital to building public trust in Canadian food. We’re very proud of the amazing farmers this award recognizes,” he said.
