Agriculture Roundup for Friday October 30, 2020

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has launched a new internet tool to help farmers take the guesswork out of crop yields.

Agroclimate Information Services Manager Catherine Champagne said Ag Canada has a lot of data and the user-friendly web tool gathers all the information and puts it into interactive maps.

“It brings it all together in one place so people can look at the forecast, look at the historical yield for the area they live in and look at all of the other pieces of information that is driving the yields that year,” Champagne said.

The yield forecasts are adjusted throughout the growing season, considering changing weather conditions.

The uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 continues to result in considerable hog market volatility.

Tyler Fulton with HAMS Marketing Services said from a price perspective, hog markets have been holding up reasonably well, but forward prices are starting to show weakness.

Fulton said individual companies along the supply chain are trying to secure supplies so that they can operate with some degree of certainty in the event there are more shutdowns.

“I think that has contributed to the run up in different products like ham and pork bellies which hit a near term high about eight to 10 days ago,” Fulton said. “Those prices have since come down very sharply.”

Every November 4-H members, leaders, alumni, and supporters and come together to spread awareness of 4-H by wearing green.

Show Your 4-H Colours supports the positive impacts the 4-H program is making in Canada and abroad.

4-H Council of Canada board chair Valerie Stone said T-shirts are available for sale to support the organization.

“You can capture those T-shirts by visiting our website. Four dollars goes right back to that provincial organization,” Stone said.

Global 4-H Day is being celebrated on Nov. 1.
