Fresh snowfall leads to icy roads in Prince Albert

Oct 20, 2020 | 12:46 PM

Prince Albert residents woke up to a wintery scene Tuesday morning as the first snowfall of the year turned the ground white.

Along with the snow came some slippery conditions on the streets, forcing drivers to remember what it’s like to operate on ice.

Brent Kennedy, roads manager with the city of Prince Albert, advised that residents continue to use caution as these icy conditions can stick around.

“The biggest thing is this is not melting [quickly]. The pavement is cold, the snow that’s there is packing and turning to pure ice, so just slow down and be cautious,” Kennedy explained.

City sanding trucks were dispatched first thing this morning, going to the major intersections in the community and remaining focused on primary arteries through the day.

“Once we’re done with that we’ll fan out from there and look at some residential areas,” Kennedy said.

He also reminded drivers to keep a safe distance if you’re behind a sanding truck, as small stones can be flung along with the sand.

Environment Canada is forecasting periods of snow to continue into Tuesday night, leading to a similar situation Wednesday morning. Beyond that, there is no more snow ahead on the seven day forecast. However, temperatures are expected to stay below freezing.
