A local cycling club has the green light from the city to create a new mountain bike training zone at Little Red River Park.

Prince Albert city council approved an operating agreement for the mountain bike skills course with the Rock N Road Cycling club at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Club president, Duane Neudorf told paNOW he’s excited to be moving ahead with the project.

The park will have a number of components like drops and balance beams where riders can practice technique and learn new skills. Nearly all will be build out of natural materials like downed trees, rocks and earth from the park.

“[People] can use it and improve their mountain bike skills and then be able to use those at Little Red River Park or any other place they go, just to feel comfortable on the bike and be able to conquer the trails,” Neudorf said.

He explained the club plans to break ground on the park next year and have some of the first elements open by summer 2021. Other components, will be completed in phases. The last one, a series of moguls and banked turns that riders propel themselves through without peddling called a pump track, is the still a few years away, he said.

The parks features are designed to help riders develop skills like bike handling, balancing, jumping and turning. (Council agenda package/City of P.A.)

It’s recommended riders buy a $35 annual membership to use the park, but Neudorf explained no one will be checking stickers or refusing anyone entry to the park if they’re not a member.

“But it you like it and enjoy it, hey, buy a membership and help support it that way,” he said. “All moneys from there goes back into the maintenance of the park and keeping it up to date and safe.”

Council unanimously approved the operating agreement for the park on Tuesday night. At a previous Sept. 28 meeting, the city’s politicians voiced enthusiasm for its creation.

“I love this,” Coun. Ted Zurakowski told the meeting. “This is a fantastic addition.”
