SPRUCE GROVE, Alta. – The grain elevator in Spruce Grove, Alberta is the latest property to be designated a Provincial Historic Resource.

The wooden Alberta Wheat Pool grain elevator, an important part of the Spruce Grove skyline for generations, will be recognized for its importance in Alberta’s history and protected as a significant historic place.

“Farmers have a long history in our province. For generations, grain elevators standing tall against the blue prairie skies have been a symbol of Alberta’s rich agricultural history. The Alberta Wheat Pool grain elevator in Spruce Grove reminds us of the contributions of farmers, past and present, and how they contribute to our quality of life,” says Leela Sharon Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women

“The Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society has worked hard to secure this designation. I’m really proud of our members for their passion and dedication over the years. I want to thank all of them, as well as our volunteers, for making the Spruce Grove Grain Elevator such an important part of our community,” said Rick Lee, president, Spruce Grove & District Agricultural Heritage Society.

The grain elevator was decommissioned in 1995 and was set for demolition until it was purchased by the Spruce Grove & District Agricultural Heritage Society. The elevator has become a prime tourist attraction and community staple, hosting events like farmers markets and fairs, while volunteers and staff educate visitors on the province’s agricultural history.

Provincial Historic Resource designations protect Alberta properties from demolition or changes to their historic character. Owners of designated historic resources are also eligible for government heritage grants to undertake conservation work.

Owners may wish to apply to have their property assessed for designation as a Provincial Historic Resource. To qualify, historic places must be associated with an important part of Alberta’s past and retain notable physical features.

The Spruce Grove grain elevator was built in 1958 and is the last remaining wooden grain elevator on the CN Rail line west of Edmonton.
