Prince Albert looking for workers for city election one month away

With one month to go, the City of Prince Albert is still looking for more residents to apply to work this year’s civic election on Nov. 9. Applications can be submitted online.

PaVotes Returning Officer, Sherry Person says they are still looking to hire for all positions.

“We are looking to fill deputy returning officer, and poll clerk positions,” Person said. “Usually we hire between 100 to 120 election workers so we would appreciate anybody who is interested to put forward their name.”

Person added the city will be advising those who applied if they will be working on the election sometime next week.

The returning officer believes the pandemic has probably impacted some peoples interest in applying for a role on election day but wants to assure the public that safety measures will be in place.

“The municipal election is taking all precautions the Saskatchewan Health Authority have established,” Person explained. “All workers will be required to wear a mask, there will be social distancing, and regular sanitizing.”

Although it is not required, Person added the city is highly encouraging the public to wear a mask while voting.

As an added safeguard there will be mail in ballot voting and advanced poll dates will all be drive thru voting at the P.A. exhibition. It is encouraged for people who are concerned about going to the polls to take advantage of these socially distanced options.

The advanced poll voting runs:

• Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Oct. 30 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
• Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Nov. 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
• Nov. 4 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
• Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Positions are already filled for the advanced poll days. The city is only hiring for the day of the municipal election.

Residents who apply for a position do not need previous experience working at an election.

“We are looking for people with basic math skills, analytical skills, and good customer service,” Person told paNOW. “If you are new to the election process you can take a poll clerk position and get some election experience.”

There will be mandatory training sessions. People who get chosen for a job must attend one of the sessions, they are three hours long and it is paid training.
