MELFORT, Sask. – The Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance asked four cabinet ministers to push for progress on the Canada-EU Trade Agreement (CETA).

In a letter sent to the Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Mary Ng, Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs Francois-Philippe Champagne, and Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Marie-Claude Bibeau, CAFTA said the deal failed to deliver on its promises for exports of nearly $1.5 billion each year.

The ministers were asked to raise the issues with their EU counterparts.

CAFTA said by not enforcing CETA, Canada is vulnerable to other countries not respecting trade commitments.

The Saskatchewan government said road improvements are coming to 55 rural municipalities.

The $6 million is part of a 3-year plan with Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) to improve 100 rural roads through the roads for growth program.

SARM president Ray Orb said infrastructure is fundamental to the movement of goods and services.

He said there are over 14 hundred bridges and culverts across the province and repairs are important and necessary for future growth.

Saskatchewan’s biggest horse show will be pushed back to next fall.

Equine Expo, held each year at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, Sask., is usually held in February. The organizing committee said the COVID-19 pandemic is still causing restrictions for large gatherings, so it was best to delay until October 2021.

The event features a weekend of education, demonstrations, and entertainment including the Trainer Challenge, industry trade show and seminars.
