SASKATCHEWAN – The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) launched a website that will give users a closer look at the 2020 barley growing season and harvest.

The website, which features crop quality, photos, and videos, was set up to replace western Canadian crop tours for international malt customers that were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Managing Director Peter Watts said buyers who would normally be able to see the crop firsthand will be able to get a sense of the quality of this year’s malting barley crop through the photos and information available on the website.

CMBTC is also developing a more in-depth video to showcase the quality and progress of the Canadian barley crop for the year. The video will be released later this fall.

As farmers continue with harvest, they may be aware of weed issues in their fields.

Ministry of Agriculture crops extension specialist Shannon Chant said right until freeze up is a good time to deal with troublesome weeds.

Before starting a fall weed control program, producers should be confident those weeds are still actively growing.

Protein Industries Canada will hold its annual meeting tomorrow to discuss progress and goals for the coming year.

The organization will review its activities over a very busy year which included spending $163 million on the plant-protein sector which is expected to lead to the creation of 50 new products and nearly 800 new Canadian jobs.

Some of the 11 projects will benefit growers with new crop varieties and artificial intelligence prediction models. Others will open new markets through the creation of processing techniques and plant-based food or feed ingredients.
