Coun. Don Cody seeks to extend lengthy political career

Nearly fifty years after he was first elected to public office, Prince Albert city council’s elder statesman, Don Cody, 84, has announced he will seek a third term as Ward 4 councillor.

Cody, the only incumbent so far to call a press conference to announce his re-election bid, told the public of his intention to run outside his riverside home Monday.

The former NDP MLA and previous Mayor of Prince Albert said he made the decision after consultation with both his council colleagues and constituents who told him the city needed someone with his kind of experience at the table as it created new policies to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re down close to $1 million that has to be recovered and we don’t want to do that by hindering the tax payers too much and at the same time we’ve got to find some revenue,” Cody said. “With the experience that I have and the longevity that I have, I think I can help.”

Reducing crime through strong support of the police, pushing for further growth and development in the city, and a renewed focus on expanding industries in northern Saskatchewan like forestry, diamond mining, uranium extraction and tourism are among his other top priorities.

“We’ve got strong police leadership resulting in the fact I think what we need to do as a council is support them,” Cody said. “We need to support them all the way and try to do more and more to prevent crime.”

Cody also emphasized his support of the new arena and aquatic centre planned for the East Hill.

Cody joins a list of current councillors who are seeking re-election. Councillors Dennis Ogrodnick, Blake Edwards, Ted Zurakowski and Evert Botha have all made campaign announcements via social media. Political newcomer Dawn Kilmer is running for Coun. Dennis Nowoselsky’s vacant Ward 7 seat. Councillors Charlene Miller (Ward 1) and Terra Lennox-Zepp (Ward 2) have not yet announced if they will seek another term.

So far all candidates are running unopposed in their respective ridings.

The municipal election is Nov. 9. The deadline to submit nomination papers is Oct. 7.
