P.A. U12 boys softball team make positive out of a negative after provincials cancelled

This weekend was supposed to be a busy one for Softball Saskatchewan.

Due to the provincial government guidelines not allowing tournaments Softball Saskatchewan had no choice but to cancel their 2020 Provincial Championships. This included 14 total tournaments both adult and minor championships.

Prince Albert were supposed to play host to the U12 boy’s championships while Shellbrook were going to host both the U14 and U16 boys’ championships.

Despite the cancellations, head coach of the U12 boys Prince Albert softball team Jordan Ambrose told paNOW on Saturday to finish off the season Debden and Shellbrook came to P.A. to play exhibition games to give the children a chance to end the season the right way.

“It’s kind of unfortunate, we were lucky to be able to have a season this year,” Ambrose said. “We didn’t think we were gonna be able to do anything, but we were able to have a short two months season where we had some weekly practices and exhibition games against other teams in our league.”

“Provincials were cancelled on Monday, so we just decided to have a little bit of a year end exhibition with Debden and one with Shellbrook.”

He said his players were excited to play in provincials but there was no way they could host it amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“They were really looking forward to working towards the opportunity to win a provincial tournament but obviously with the tournament not being able to happen we had a really good team this year so I think the boys were disappointed,” he explained.

He added they boys were happy they got to play because something is better than nothing.
