CFIA has warning for those receiving unrequested seed packages in the mail
OTTAWA, ON. — Sometimes, seed packages come in your mail as a ‘thank you’ for a charity donation. Sometimes, they simply show up for an unknown reason from someone, or some company you don’t know, and you never requested the seeds and don’t know what they are.
Unrequested seed packets showing up in mailboxes have come to the attention of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
In a statement issued Tuesday (July 28), the CFIA urged anyone who receives a package of unsolicited seeds not to plant them, as they are coming from an unknown origin.
“Unauthorized seeds could be from invasive plants, or carry plant pests, which can be harmful when introduced into Canada. These species can invade agricultural and natural areas, causing serious damage to plant resources”.
